How to get rid of an old mattress in Cardiff

Mattresses are among the most fly-tipped items in South Wales, and it is because every easy option is closed. Here are the four that are actually open.

Why a mattress is such a problem

It will not fit in a wheelie bin. It cannot go in most skips. It will not go in a car. It is too big for the boot, too awkward for one person to carry, and too bulky to leave in the hall for another month — which is exactly why mattresses end up dumped in lanes across Cardiff more than almost any other single item.

There is a rule behind it too. Mattresses count as soft furnishings, and under the persistent organic pollutants regulations they have to be kept separate from general waste and sent for incineration with energy recovery rather than being landfilled or shredded with everything else. That separate handling is why nothing takes them for free.

The four legal routes

1. Household waste recycling centre

You can take a mattress to a council recycling centre yourself. It is the cheapest option if you already have a van or a roof rack and someone to lift the other end. Booking requirements, opening hours and van restrictions change, so check the Cardiff Council or Newport City Council site before you drive over. Bear in mind most centres restrict vans and trailers without a permit.

2. Council bulky waste collection

Both councils run a chargeable bulky item collection. It is inexpensive per item, but you book a slot rather than choose one, waits of a fortnight or more are common in summer, and the mattress usually has to be at the kerbside on the morning — not inside the house. If you are not in a hurry and you can get it out to the front yourself, it is good value.

3. The retailer taking the old one away

If a new mattress is being delivered, ask about old-mattress takeaway at the point of order. Many retailers offer it for a small fee and it is the least effort of any option. It has to be arranged before delivery day — drivers will not take it on the spot.

4. A licensed clearance company

We charge £50 for a mattress of any size, collected from wherever it is in the house, usually within a day or two. We carry it down the stairs, out through the door and it is gone. If there is a bed frame with it, or bags of other things going at the same time, it is worth quoting together — a mattress plus a few bags plus a bedside table is often cheaper as a quarter load than as separate items.

What not to do

Do not leave it in the back lane. Do not lean it against a communal bin store. Do not hand it to a man in a van who quoted £20 cash and cannot show you a waste carrier licence — that mattress will be in a lay-by by evening, and if anything in the pile traces back to your address, the fixed penalty comes to you, not to him.

Check any carrier's registration on the Natural Resources Wales public register. Ours is CBDU034669. It takes a minute and it is the whole of your legal protection.

Can a mattress be donated?

Rarely, and be realistic about it. Charities and furniture reuse schemes can only accept mattresses that are clean, undamaged and still carrying the original fire-safety label. Most second-hand mattresses fail on the label alone. If yours genuinely passes, a local reuse organisation is by far the best outcome — if it does not, do not waste a fortnight finding out.

Getting it collected

Send a photo of the mattress and tell us which floor it is on. Price back the same hour, collection usually within a couple of days, and a receipt with our licence number so you have proof of where it went.

Quick answers

Common questions

How much does it cost to remove a mattress in Cardiff?

£50 for a mattress of any size, collected from inside the property. If it is going along with other items, it is often cheaper quoted as part of a quarter van load at £160.

Can I put a mattress in my wheelie bin or a skip?

No. Mattresses are soft furnishings and must be kept separate from general waste, so they are excluded from kerbside bins and from most skips or charged as a surcharge.

Will the council collect an old mattress?

Yes, through the chargeable bulky waste collection service, but you book a slot rather than pick one and waits can run to a couple of weeks. The mattress normally has to be at the kerbside on the collection morning.
